ABOUT US

OUR BELIEFS

CALLED TO FOLLOW JESUS . . .

Lutheran Christians believe that God's will for the world is revealed fully in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We welcome all who join us as we discover how to best respond to God's grace, love, and forgiveness by heeding the call to follow Jesus and "to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).

This church confesses the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds as true declarations of the faith of the Lutheran Church, as well as the Augsburg Confession and Book of Concord.

The norm of faith and life of this church is the Holy Scriptures.

OUR COMMUNITY

As of December 31, 2020, there were 3.3 million baptized members in the ELCA. There are nearly 8,900 congregations organized in 65 synods in nine geographic regions.  The ELCA is a diverse church body, becoming more so every day.  St. John's Lewistown is a part of the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the ELCA.  The Upper Susquehanna Synod (USS) is one of the 65 synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Our mission is to have synod members grow as disciples of Jesus, as they serve together to make Christ known. Our synod in north central Pennsylvania includes 118 congregations. Geographically, the synod is further organized into six conferences, headed by a dean and secretary. Our conferences are named for bodies of water: Buffalo Valley, Middle Creek, North Branch, Tulpehocken and West Branch.
